Responsible for biology leadership of drug discovery programs identified using the phenotypic screening and systems neurobiology approach employed by the Sunovion Discovery Sciences group. The position requires broad scientific expertise in neuropsychiatric and neurological diseases and the ability to work independently to design effective research strategies spanning in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo approaches. Experimental studies will be conducted through external research partners, as part of our strategy of a flexible business model for discovery. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of accomplishments demonstrating the successful identification of novel drug candidates. Excellent resource management skills and the ability to initiate and maintain effective working relationships with CROs and collaborators are essential.

Essential Functions: •Works with medicinal chemists, pharmacologists and preclinical safety scientists to advance programs to the identification of novel, small molecule drug development candidates. Takes primary responsibility for research strategy and the design, monitoring and reporting of pharmacology studies to support candidate nomination and IND/NDA submissions. Manages external relationships with CROs, research partners and academic institutions to deliver high impact pharmacology results. May serve as lead pharmacologist on clinical development teams to deliver mechanism of action studies to support candidate advancement.

•Effectively interacts with other functional groups such as Translational Medicine/Early Development, regulatory, clinical development and commercial to develop program strategy. Presents recommendations to senior leadership.

•Responsible for effective internal and external scientific communication (e.g. reports, regulatory documents, research publications).

Minimum Education Requirements: PhD

Experience Required: 7 - 10 Years

Knowledge & Skills (General and Technical): •PhD with at least 8 years of relevant CNS drug discovery experience and in-depth knowledge of neuroscience specifically as it relates to neurological and psychiatric disorders.

•A strong background in the design and conduct of behavioral pharmacology studies to examine novel treatments for psychiatric disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar depression) and neurological diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, epilepsy, pain) is essential.

•Must be knowledgeable in other in vitro/ex vivo techniques to develop effective research strategies that address mechanism of action questions.

•A strong understanding of translational approaches such as ERP/qEEG and sleep EEG, including the ability to manage studies and interpret EEG results, is strongly preferred.

•Demonstrated record of accomplishments showing effective project leadership and the ability to work collaboratively with external organizations.

•Experience in writing regulatory documents and presenting programs to senior management is strongly preferred.

•Ability to work on computers for extended periods, robust data analysis skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office professional software and statistical analysis tools are required.

• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and an innovative spirit with capacity for generating new ideas.
